Why the 6-foot, 90–135° rule

In operator safety, what’s the physics reason we stand at least 6 feet away and at 90–135 degrees from the primary beam during a 70 kVp intraoral exposure? I tell new assistants it’s scatter geometry plus the inverse square law — agree or add nuance?
